By measuring the ecosystem respiration responses to different environmental gradients and conditions, particularly drought and nitrogen availability, to clarify or reduce the uncertainties of terrestrial net ecosystem exchange between vegetation types in both Mediterranean and temperate regions. Furthermore, to integrate those information into GOTILWA+ and using the scaling up simulation results together with climate change scenarios to estimate the current and future carbon stocks and also to assess the likely impacts on carbon balance in the European scale.
Brief Outlines of Project Work
- Review articles and relevant materials in regard to process-based models of climate change and carbon cycle.
- Measurement of ecosystem respiration (both autotrophic and heterotrophic) regarding the experiment design and modeling requirement.
- Exam the relationship among water stress and substrate concentration and availability and the subsequent influence to ecosystem respiration.
- Model inter-comparison and data-fusion.
- Refine the forest model GOTILWA+ by apply the knowledge and data gained into it.
- Integrate the results obtained above with climate change scenarios to estimate and assess the possible future carbon cycle behaviors.
Major Accomplishments Expected
- Refinement of the model GOTILWA+.
- To draw the frame of future carbon stocks and balance considering the possible climate change scenarios in the European scale or even larger.
