Wetland coupled hydrology-carbon cycle models will be improved in this study to better account for the effects of changing drainage basin hydrology and permafrost degradation. Predicted annual variation in CH4 emissions will be compared with top-down estimates of high latitude wetland fluxes derived from satellite observations and inverse model simulations.
In particular we will focus on the interaction of hydrological process and methane emission in the subarctic area. A permafrost hydrological model will be employed in this study with modified modules, to construct the hydrological condition. Annual CH4 emissions will be calculated by a wetland methane emission model. All the simulated results will be compared with remote sensing data or field observation data. With those models, the climate sensitivity of high latitude CH4 emissions will be assessed and future response of high latitude wetland CH4 emissions to climate change will be performed.
